Historically, breast augmentation has proven to be a safe effective surgical treatment for women who wish to improve their appearance. For the right candidate, breast augmentation surgery is safe, with none of the medical side-effects that the media once ascribed to it. Even more important, the benefits of renewed self-esteem and confidence make this a procedure of choice for many thousands of women every year.
Now, with Prasad Cosmetic Surgery’s minimally invasive surgical techniques, you can enhance your lifestyle and your appearance in a few short hours. Typically, Dr. Prasad performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure with sedation and local anesthesia. A small incision under the arm or under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall will go virtually undetected and offers women beautiful, natural-looking results.
Whether you desire to restore your breasts to a youthful appearance which may have been stripped away by childbirth and breast feeding or perhaps you simply desire to have a lustier, fuller bust line, Dr. Prasad can help. One consultation with Dr. Prasad will allow him to assess your breasts’ appearance, your desire for your overall “look,” and with you, he will determine your best course of action.
What is breast augmentation surgery?
Commonly referred to as “breast enhancement” or a “boob job”, breast augmentation is a procedure where a breast implant is placed behind a woman’s breast. The result is an increased bustline by one or more cup sizes. There are many reasons why a woman may be considering breast implants, including:
- Self-esteem issues
- A desire to wear certain types of clothing or swimwear
- To correct abnormalities in size or shape
- A change in shape due to age, weight loss, or childbirth
- Reconstruction from disease-related side effects, such as breast cancer
Who are the best candidates for breast augmentation?
If you are considering breast implants, please take the time to think about the reason why you want this procedure performed. While breast augmentation can do wonders for your confidence and self-esteem, it may change the way you are viewed by other people, it may or may not help you reach certain cosmetic goals. To discuss all aspects of your cosmetic goals, schedule a consultation with Dr. Prasad to review what to expect throughout the process, what types of results you might experience and how this will help you achieve your desired cosmetic goals.
If you do have realistic expectations about what breast augmentation can do for you, and you are in good physical health, then you are a good candidate for the procedure.
What Types of Breast Implants Are There?
In our offices, two types of breast implants are available. Both are silicone shells filled with a solution: one has a silicone gel filling, and the other is filled with saline, which is a saltwater solution. In either case, our staff can help you determine which type of implant is best for you.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
First, you will go through a consultation with Dr. Prasad. This will determine whether or not you are a candidate for breast implants, and if you are, what type of breast implants will be used. Your health will be evaluated and the surgery will be explained to you. This is the point where being candid is key. There are limitations to this surgery, as explained above, and your expectations should be managed throughout the process. You will also discuss the placement of the implants and which alternative you decide would be best for you.
All pre-surgery instructions will be given to you. Certain types of medication may need to be avoided, as well as eating and drinking after a certain time. You will also be informed that you should arrange for someone to take you home and assist you for a few days as you recover from the operation.
Your breast augmentation surgery will be performed in our joint Commission certified operating room. Depending on your skin tone and body type, the incisions will be made in one of three typical areas: where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (which is the skin surrounding the nipple), or in your armpit. The goal of the incision will be to minimize scarring.
Your breast tissue will be lifted, along with your skin, and a space will be created behind the breast for the implants. The implants will then be inserted behind your nipples. Your incisions will be stitched, and a bandage is applied.
When your surgery is finished, you will likely be sore and tired for several days. However, pain and discomfort can be managed by prescriptions written by your doctor, and you will feel much better within 24-48 hours. Depending on the level of activity and physical labor required for your job, you will probably be fine to return to work within a few days.
Exercising and other normal activities will be limited due to increased sensitivity at first. Within a few weeks, this will subside. Talk to your doctor about an appropriate timeline to resume all normal physical activities.
Risks with Breast Augmentation
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with it, as well as complications. The most common issue is capsular contracture, which happens when the capsule around the implant tightens. This also can happen to the scar. When this occurs, the implant is squeezed, and it begins to feel hardened. In some cases, the implant will need to be removed or replaced.
Like most surgical procedures, there will be some swelling and pain due to the excessive bleeding. If the bleeding persists, it may need to be surgically treated. There is also a small risk of infection, usually within the first week after surgery. If infection occurs, the implant may need to be removed temporarily for a few months until the infection heals.
Sensitivity issues are common, though most disappear over time. Your fertility and ability to nurse will not be affected by the procedure.
One of the more well-known risks is the rupturing of the implant. If an injury occurs, the silicone shell can leak or break. When using a saline-filled implant, your body will absorb the saline, with no harm to your body, and the implant will deflate. If this is a gel-filled implant, you may not see any change, as the capsule containing the implant may hold the gel. However, this can fail as well, and the gel could move to other areas of your body. In either case, a surgery will be scheduled to replace the implant.
It is important to discuss with your plastic surgeon the risks and complications associated with breast augmentation before your surgery.
