Enhancing Your Appearance With Facial Implants

Before and After Chin Implant
BEFORE (L) AND AFTER (R) CHIN IMPLANT

The appearance of your face is determined by three basic components: skin, soft tissues and underlying facial bones. If the structure of your face is disproportionate — the chin is recessed, the jaw undefined or cheeks are flat — it can significantly affect your self image.

Defined facial features, visible contours and natural angles that are proportionate all create structural balance in your face and a more attractive appearance.

If you are bothered by a small chin, weak jaw or lack of facial contour, plastic surgery with facial implants may benefit you. While any area of your face can be augmented with implants, the cheekbones, chin and jaw are the most common sites for facial implants. Facial implants bring balance and better proportion to the structural appearance of your face. They define your face by increasing projection and creating more distinct features.

Is it right for me?

Plastic surgery with facial implants is best performed on people whose head and skull have reached physical maturity, which generally occurs in late adolescence. This procedure is a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke
  • You have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for improvement of facial contours

Facial Enhancements: Cheek and Chin Implants

Cheek Implants (Malar/Submalar Implants)

The new aesthetic in the modern world for cosmetic rejuvenation surgery is to make a person look younger, not just to tighten up the face or achieve the “face caught in the wind tunnel” look.

One of the most challenging problems that a surgeon must address has to do with loss of volume as the face ages. Sometimes, injectible fillers can meet the need of the patient.

There are times, however when the volume of loss will not be appropriately managed by fillers. In these situations, Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad may recommend a cheek implant to restore volume and help with under eye hollowness.

Chin Implants

Chin implants usually make a very dramatic difference to the face. Usually small chins or “weak” chins are traits that are genetic and run in families. There may also be developmental problems that did not allow for proper chin formation. Chin implants can also be considered when a patient has excess skin or fat in the neck.

For these patients, liposuction along with the implant may be a good idea to rejuvenate their face. Chin implants are made from surgical silicone and are made in a variety of shapes and sizes. Dr. Prasad and the patient will spend a lot of time together to decide which type of implant is best for the patient’s best result.

Chin implants feel natural and follow along the edge of the jawline. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and IV sedation and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Recovery time is about a week.

Chin implants are placed either internally through the mouth or externally through an incision in the natural crease of the chin. If a patient wants to remove or replace the implant it can be done under local anesthesia. After chin surgery, minor swelling, bruising and temporary numbness may occur but will resolve over 2 weeks.
